Get texts from ChatGPT Dots: SMS for OpenAI's always-on agents

Add AI Text-a-roo to ChatGPT as a custom MCP server, sign in with your phone number, and enable it for your Dot. On Business, Enterprise and Edu plans your Dot can then text you and wait for replies. On Pro, custom MCP servers are limited to read-only tools, so sending texts needs a directory-listed plugin.

Set up ChatGPT Dots

    In ChatGPT, open Plugins, choose +, then Add custom MCP server.

    Paste the AI Text-a-roo MCP URL.

    Choose OAuth, sign in with your phone number and the 6-digit code we text you, then Create as a plugin. We'll text you that the app is connected.

    Make sure the plugin is installed and enabled for your account, so your Dot can use it.

    Ask your Dot something like “Text me when my package is out for delivery.”

Good to know

  • OpenAI's help center says custom MCP servers have full access on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, but Pro is limited to read and fetch permissions. On Pro, the tools that send texts won't run until AI Text-a-roo is available as a listed plugin.
  • Dots use the supported plugins that are installed and enabled for your account.
  • Dots are rolling out to Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets.

Can ChatGPT Dots text me?

Yes, with AI Text-a-roo connected as a custom MCP plugin on a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace. Your Dot calls the send_text tool and the message arrives as a normal SMS. On ChatGPT Pro, custom MCP servers are read-only, so sending needs a directory-listed plugin.

Can I text my Dot back?

When your Dot asks you something and waits, yes: it reads your reply with the wait_for_reply tool. Texts you send without being asked can't reach a Dot yet.
