# Let Claude Duet text you: SMS for Anthropic's proactive agent

> Connect Claude Duet to AI Text-a-roo so it can text your morning brief, alerts and approval requests to any phone. Setup takes about two minutes with a custom connector.

Claude Duet uses the connectors on your Claude account. Add AI Text-a-roo as a custom connector, sign in with your phone number, and Duet can text you its brief, urgent alerts and questions, then wait for your reply. You don't need an app or a new inbox.

## Set up Claude Duet

1. In Claude, open Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector.
2. Paste the AI Text-a-roo MCP URL and choose Add.

3. Choose Connect, enter your phone number, and type the 6-digit code we text you. Then allow access. We'll text you that the app is connected.
4. Optional: upload the AI Text-a-roo skill (Customize → Skills) so Duet knows when a text is worth sending.

5. Ask Duet for something, like “Text me a short brief every weekday at 7am.”

- You text Claude Duet: Partly. Duet can text you a question and wait for your answer. It can't receive texts you send it out of the blue, because Duet only checks your connected apps every few hours.

## Good to know

- Claude Duet is a research preview for Pro and Max subscribers in the US. Anthropic's help center says Duet uses the connectors on your Claude account; it doesn't specifically list custom connectors, so check that AI Text-a-roo appears in Duet after you add it.
- Duet asks before it acts on your behalf, so expect an approval prompt the first time it sends a text.
- On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner adds custom connectors for the organization.

## FAQ

### Can Claude Duet send text messages?

Not on its own. Anthropic notes that Duet doesn't send text messages to other people. With AI Text-a-roo connected as a custom connector, Duet can text you (and, on Pro, your contacts) through the AI Text-a-roo MCP server.

### Can I text Claude Duet and get an answer?

Partly. Duet can text you a question and wait a few minutes for your reply. Texts you send without being asked won't reach Duet, because it has no way to receive messages between its scheduled check-ins. For a fully two-way SMS agent, use the bridge with Claude Code.
